Retro Handbills from Japan

Setsuya Hashizume, researcher and professor at Osaka University in Japan, compiled this volume of reproductions of handbills, illustrative of the rich history of commercial design in the city of Osaka. Every kind of product, service, destination, entertainment, and more seems to be represented in this impressive collection of printed matter that spans practically the whole 20th century. Bold kanji lettering, bright colours, and eye-catching illustrations, offer fascinating insight into trends in Japan’s commercial design throughout the years. Many have clear influences from the graphic design traditions of the West, while others are uniquely Japanese in their appearance.
